Auditions for Silent Sky will be held:
Friday, February 20, from 6:30 – 9 pm.

You only need to come to one session. We do not cast with time slots, and prefer to have you read with several people. Please come at the appointed time and stay for awhile if at all possible.

Auditions will be cold readings from the script. You may present a prepared monologue if you wish, but it is not necessary. There are roles for four women and one man (see below for more on the characters).

We will also be casting understudies.

Westview Church, 6710 Arapahoe, Boulder. We are in the large hall on the main floor of the building.

IMPORTANT DATES:

The show opens on May 22nd in the Carsen Theater at the Dairy Arts Center in Boulder for a run of three weeks.Performances will be on Fridays at 7 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays at 2 pm. We close on June 7th.

Rehearsals will begin in late March, from 6:00 – 9 pm Mondays through Fridays. Not everyone will be called for every rehearsal.

All cast members must be available for all rehearsals during the first two weeks of May.

THE PLAY and THE ROLES:

Silent Sky tells the true story of Henrietta Swan Leavitt, an early 20th-century astronomer who worked at the Harvard Observatory. A decade before women gained the right to vote, Henrietta and her fellow women “computers” transformed the science of the stars.

The characters:

Henrietta Leavitt – brilliant, meticulous, excited; has a hearing disability
Margaret Leavitt – Henrietta’s sister, homebody, creative, sweet, writes music
Peter Shaw – the head astronomer’s apprentice
Annie Cannon – the leader of the “computers”, terse and sure, grows into a firebrand
Williamina Fleming – smart as a whip and fun, Scottish.
